During the week of September 16, 2019, Gary Chock and Pat Lynett will be conducting one-day seminars on tsunami-resilient structural design in Anchorage and Juneau, sponsored by the Structural Engineers Association of Alaska. The purpose of these one-day seminars is to familiarize Alaska structural and civil engineers with the requirements and fundamental analysis skills necessary to implement a tsunami-resilient design of a building or other structure in accordance with the ASCE 7-16 Standard, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures.

Gary Chock is the Chair of the ASCE 7 Tsunami Loads and Effects Subcommittee that completed the first national standard for tsunami-resistant design for the 2016 edition of the ASCE 7 Standard and the 2018 International Building Code.  In 2015, Gary Chock received the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute’s Walter P. Moore Award for technical expertise in the development of structural codes and standards.  In 2016, Gary Chock was named a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, which is its highest honor.

 Patrick Lynett is a professor of civil and coastal engineering at the University of Southern California, where he works in the area of coastal impacts due to extreme natural events, specializing in the hydrodynamic modeling of tsunami waves, currents, and runup, tsunami effects on coastal ports and facilities, and tsunami overland flows. He is a Member of the ASCE 7 Tsunami Loads and Effects Subcommittee.
